SMSPlus (Amiga)

SMSPlus emulator on AmigaOS 4 running the Sega Master System game Chuck Rock II - Son of Chuck and Level 1-4 on window. SMSPlus is an emulator of the Sega Master System and Game Gear hardware. The Sega Master System (SMS) is an 8 bit console developed by Sega, released in the mid 1980ies. It became very succesful, especially in Europe and Brazil, while in USA and Japan it did not have any chance against the NES console which had the biggest market share. The Game Gear (GG) is a portable handheld console released in the early 1990ies, having very similar hardware to the Sega Master System, only with some special graphics modes, better video processor and stereo sound. Because of the hardware similarities between the SMS and the GG consoles, most often the games are available for the both platforms, or are easy to port from the one platform to the other. This similarity also makes the development of emulators for the both consoles, a simultaneous job, where developing the emulation features for the one platform, benefits the other as well. Because the SMSPlus port for the AmigaOS 4.0 crashed under my install for some reason, after some efforts to contact the Amiga port maintainer, I had no other choise than to port the emulator by myself for my needs. Presented on this page is the SDL version of the emulator, which is the easiest to port to any platform. It worked quite well without any problems, while developing some software for the Sega Master System and is confirmed to be stable. It proved to be an irreplaceable utility while developing King Kong for the Sega Master System.

It is well developed emulator, supporting all the hardware features of the consoles, all the video modes, the sound generator (including the noise channel), save states support, frameskip and several graphic filters, high compatibility with the software released for the consoles. Even if the list with the available software is not enormous, the released games and demos are very good, making it an enjoyable emulation experience of the Sega 8 bit consoles. Thanks to the portability of SMSPlus the people with different platforms, can enjoy some of the Sega hardware, which still have a huge fanbase around the world.
